The Walk That Inspired the Masterpiece:
The original artwork by Shri Jagannath Panda is inspired by the chapter ‘700 Meters’ from the book The Tiger’s Pause written by Swami Virupaksha. In it, he chronicles the historic and gallant conflict resolution initiative undertaken by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in Sri Lanka.
It was 21st September 2006, Gurudev had set foot in Sri Lanka once again—his third visit for a mission that demanded both courage and compassion. The nation was torn apart, caught between the government and the LTTE, locked in a conflict that had dragged on for decades. Amidst this turmoil, Gurudev sought not politics, but peace. On this day, he was headed to meet LTTE leader Prabhakaran face to face.
The journey to that meeting was unlike any other. During those conflict years the government’s authority ended just beyond Omanthai Town in the northern part of Sri Lanka. The LTTE territory began a little further. Between the two was a no-man’s land—a buffer zone feared by all, for it was seeded with landmines.
For Gurudev and the three devotees accompanying him on the mission, the only way to reach the LTTE side was to walk 700 meters through a live minefield.
As Swami Virupaksha writes: “Without battling an eyelid, Gurudev told everyone, ‘Just follow my footsteps.’ … One by one they walked behind Gurudev, setting their feet on the footprints he left in the soil.”
Placing their complete trust in Gurudev, the team crossed safely and reached the LTTE side for the scheduled meeting.
Over the decades, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has led many such courageous—dare we say, daring—peace initiatives across the world, in Iraq, Iran, Colombia, Kashmir, North-East India, and beyond.
Inspired by Gurudev’s courage and unwavering commitment to peace,
renowned Indian artist Jagannath Panda conceived “The Trust Walk.”
